Love begins with what God has done

First John 4:19 gives us the foundation: we love because God first loved us. Before love becomes our response, it is His gift. We do not earn His affection by becoming useful, impressive, or easy to love.

Romans 5:8 tells us that Christ died for us while we were still sinners. At the cross, Jesus bore our sin and gave Himself for people who could not save themselves. His resurrection secured a living hope that our failures cannot manufacture and our efforts cannot purchase.

That is more than a moving example. It is the good news that changes our relationship with God and begins to reshape our relationships with others. We love from acceptance in Christ, not in a desperate attempt to win it.

Galatians 5:22–23 names love as fruit of the Spirit. As He works in us, love becomes more than something we agree with. It takes shape in patience with a difficult person, generosity that costs us something, and the humility to apologize without defending every mistake.

More than a feeling. Never less than truth.

First Corinthians 13:4–7 describes love as patient and kind, not self-seeking or easily provoked. It also tells us that love rejoices with the truth. Loving someone does not require pretending harm is harmless or calling every choice good.

Sometimes love offers encouragement. Sometimes it tells a hard truth gently. Sometimes it holds a necessary boundary while refusing bitterness. The question is not simply whether we sound agreeable, but whether we seek another person's good with the humility and courage Christ teaches us.

Jesus calls His people to love one another as He has loved them in John 13:34–35. A printed word cannot do that work for us. But it can bring the calling back into view when we are tempted to make the day only about ourselves.
