Music is one of God's most beautiful gifts to humanity. From the beginning of creation, music has been woven into the fabric of existence—the morning stars sang together at creation (Job 38:7), angels sang at Christ's birth (Luke 2:13-14), and heaven resounds with eternal songs of worship (Revelation 5:9-13).
But what is the ultimate purpose of music? Why did God create this powerful art form?
Our The Purpose of Music celebrates the truth that music exists ultimately for worship and the glory of God.
Music in Creation
Music is embedded in God's creation from the very beginning.
The Morning Stars Sang
Job 38:7 describes creation: "When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy."
Before humanity existed, there was music. The heavenly beings sang at creation, celebrating God's creative work.
Created for Worship
Music wasn't an afterthought or a human invention—it's part of God's design. He created sound, rhythm, melody, and harmony. He gave humans the capacity to create and enjoy music.
Why? For worship. For His glory.
Biblical Commands to Sing
Scripture is filled with commands to sing to the Lord.
Psalm 96:1-2
"Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day."
Psalm 100:1-2
"Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!"
Ephesians 5:19
"Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart."
Colossians 3:16
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."
These aren't suggestions—they're commands. God commands His people to sing.
The Purpose of Music: Worship
The primary purpose of music is worship—declaring God's worth, celebrating His character, and bringing Him glory.
Music Declares God's Worth
Worship means to declare worth. When we sing to God, we're declaring that He is worthy of our praise, our adoration, our devotion.
Psalm 96:4 proclaims: "For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods."
Music Celebrates God's Character
Throughout the Psalms, music celebrates God's attributes—His holiness, power, wisdom, love, faithfulness, and mercy.
Psalm 103:1-5 models this: "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."
Music Brings God Glory
Ultimately, music exists to bring glory to God. When we sing His praises, we're magnifying His name and bringing Him the honor He deserves.
Psalm 29:2 commands: "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness."
Music in Scripture
Music plays a central role throughout Scripture.
The Song of Moses
After God delivered Israel through the Red Sea, Moses and the Israelites sang a song of victory and praise (Exodus 15:1-18). This is one of the first recorded songs in Scripture, celebrating God's mighty deliverance.
The Psalms
The book of Psalms is essentially a hymnal—150 songs for worship. These psalms cover every human emotion and experience, yet they all point to God.
The Psalms teach us to:
- Praise God in joy (Psalm 100)
- Cry out to God in sorrow (Psalm 13)
- Trust God in fear (Psalm 23)
- Confess sin to God (Psalm 51)
- Thank God for His goodness (Psalm 136)
The Song of Mary
When Mary learned she would bear the Messiah, she sang the Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), a song exalting God's greatness and faithfulness.
Paul and Silas in Prison
After being beaten and imprisoned, Paul and Silas sang hymns at midnight (Acts 16:25). Their worship in suffering demonstrates that music is for all circumstances, not just when life is easy.
Heaven's Worship
Revelation gives us glimpses of heaven's eternal worship, filled with songs:
- The new song (Revelation 5:9): "Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God."
- The song of Moses and the Lamb (Revelation 15:3-4): "Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations!"
Music for God's Glory, Not Ours
One of the greatest dangers in music is using it for our own glory rather than God's.
The Temptation of Performance
Music can easily become about performance, skill, or drawing attention to ourselves. But true worship music points to God, not to the musician.
John 3:30 applies to music: "He must increase, but I must decrease."
The Heart Matters Most
God cares more about the heart than the skill. You don't have to be a talented musician to worship God through music. What matters is a sincere heart.
Ephesians 5:19 emphasizes "singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart." It's the heart that matters most.
Music as Idolatry
When music becomes an end in itself rather than a means to worship God, it becomes idolatry. We can idolize musical style, musical skill, or musical experience.
But music exists for God's glory, not our entertainment or self-expression.
Different Styles, Same Purpose
Throughout church history and across cultures, Christians have worshiped God through diverse musical styles—hymns, psalms, spiritual songs, contemporary worship, gospel, classical, and more.
Unity in Diversity
While styles may differ, the purpose remains the same: to glorify God and edify the church.
Colossians 3:16 mentions "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs"—suggesting diversity in musical expression, all directed toward God.
Cultural Expression
Different cultures express worship through different musical forms. This diversity reflects the global nature of God's kingdom and the creativity He's given to humanity.
Revelation 7:9 describes heaven's worship: "After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb."
Music in the Christian Life
Music serves multiple purposes in the Christian life.
Teaching and Admonishing
Colossians 3:16 says we use music for "teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom."
Music is a powerful teaching tool. We remember truths set to music. Hymns and worship songs teach theology, reinforce biblical truth, and shape our understanding of God.
Encouraging One Another
Ephesians 5:19 speaks of "addressing one another" in song. When we sing together, we encourage one another, build up the body, and strengthen faith.
Expressing Emotion
Music gives us language for emotions we can't express in words. The Psalms model this—songs of joy, lament, confession, thanksgiving, and trust.
Spiritual Warfare
Worship is a weapon in spiritual warfare. When Paul and Silas sang in prison, God sent an earthquake (Acts 16:25-26). When Jehoshaphat sent singers before the army, God gave victory (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).
Making Music for God's Glory
How can we ensure our music glorifies God?
Focus on God, Not Self
Ask: Does this music point to God or to me? Does it magnify His name or mine?
Sing Truth
Ensure the lyrics are biblically sound, theologically accurate, and Christ-centered.
Sing with Your Heart
Don't just go through the motions. Engage your heart, mind, and soul in worship.
Sing Together
Corporate worship is powerful. Join with other believers in singing God's praises.
Sing Always
Ephesians 5:19-20 connects singing with "giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Make music a regular part of your life—in joy and sorrow, in victory and trial.
The Eternal Song
One day, we'll join the eternal song of heaven, worshiping God forever.
Revelation 5:13 gives us a glimpse: "And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, 'To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!'"
Our worship now is practice for eternity.
