There is one name that stands above all others. One name that carries ultimate authority, power, and glory. One name at which every knee will bow and every tongue confess.
That name is Jesus.
Philippians 2:9-11 declares: "Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Our The Name Above Every Name celebrates this supreme truth, reminding us that Jesus' name is exalted above all names and deserves all glory, honor, and praise.
The Context: The Humiliation and Exaltation of Christ
Philippians 2:5-11 is one of the most profound passages in Scripture about Christ's person and work.
The Humiliation (vv. 5-8)
Paul describes Christ's voluntary humiliation:
"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross."
Jesus, though fully God, humbled Himself by:
- Taking on human flesh
- Becoming a servant
- Obeying the Father completely
- Dying the shameful death of crucifixion
The Exaltation (vv. 9-11)
Because of Christ's obedience and humiliation, God exalted Him:
"Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
God responded to Christ's humiliation with supreme exaltation, giving Him the name above every name.
What Is "The Name Above Every Name"?
What does it mean that Jesus has "the name that is above every name"?
The Name "Jesus"
The name "Jesus" (Greek: Iēsous, Hebrew: Yeshua) means "Yahweh saves" or "the Lord is salvation." It's a name that declares His mission: to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).
This name is above every other name because Jesus alone saves. Acts 4:12 declares: "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
The Title "Lord"
Philippians 2:11 says every tongue will confess that "Jesus Christ is Lord." The Greek word Kyrios (Lord) is the same word used in the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) to translate the divine name Yahweh.
When we confess Jesus as Lord, we're declaring that He is God—the sovereign ruler of all creation.
Supreme Authority
The name above every name signifies supreme authority. Jesus Himself declared: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me" (Matthew 28:18).
There is no authority higher than Jesus. No power greater. No name more exalted.
The Power of Jesus' Name
Throughout Scripture, we see the power of Jesus' name.
Salvation in His Name
Romans 10:13 promises: "For 'everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'"
Salvation comes through calling on Jesus' name in faith. His name has the power to save.
Healing in His Name
Acts 3:6 records Peter healing a lame man: "But Peter said, 'I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!'"
Jesus' name has power to heal, restore, and make whole.
Authority in His Name
Luke 10:17 records the disciples' report: "The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, 'Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!'"
Jesus' name has authority over spiritual forces, demons, and darkness.
Prayer in His Name
John 14:13-14 promises: "Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it."
We pray in Jesus' name, approaching the Father through the Son, confident that our prayers are heard.
Every Knee Will Bow
Philippians 2:10 declares that "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth."
Universal Submission
This describes universal submission to Christ's authority. Every created being—angels in heaven, humans on earth, and demons under the earth—will bow before Jesus.
This isn't optional. It's not a suggestion. Every knee will bow. The only question is whether you'll bow willingly now in worship or unwillingly then in judgment.
Voluntary and Involuntary
Some will bow voluntarily, joyfully confessing Jesus as Lord and Savior. Others will bow involuntarily, forced to acknowledge His lordship even as they face judgment.
Romans 14:11 quotes Isaiah 45:23: "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God."
Every Tongue Will Confess
Philippians 2:11 continues: "and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Universal Confession
Every tongue—every person who has ever lived—will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. This confession will be universal, comprehensive, and unavoidable.
To God's Glory
Notice the purpose: "to the glory of God the Father." When every knee bows and every tongue confesses Jesus as Lord, it brings glory to God the Father.
The exaltation of Jesus doesn't compete with the Father's glory—it magnifies it. When Jesus is honored, the Father is glorified.
Honoring the Name of Jesus
How should we honor the name above every name?
Worship Jesus
Give Jesus the worship He deserves. Sing His praises, declare His worth, celebrate His goodness.
Revelation 5:12 records heaven's worship: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!"
Confess Jesus as Lord
Romans 10:9 says: "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
Confess Jesus as Lord with your mouth and believe in your heart. This is the path to salvation.
Live for Jesus' Glory
Colossians 3:17 instructs: "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Live in a way that honors Jesus' name. Let your words and actions bring glory to Him.
Proclaim Jesus' Name
Acts 1:8 commissions us: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Make Jesus' name known. Share the gospel. Testify to His saving power.
Defend Jesus' Name
In a world that dishonors, mocks, and blasphemes Jesus' name, stand firm. Don't be ashamed of His name. Defend His honor.
Romans 1:16 declares: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes."
The Name That Saves
Above all, Jesus' name is the name that saves.
No Other Name
Acts 4:12 is exclusive and absolute: "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
Not Buddha. Not Muhammad. Not any other religious figure or philosophy. Only Jesus saves.
Call on His Name
Romans 10:13 invites: "For 'everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'"
Salvation is available to everyone who calls on Jesus' name in faith. No matter who you are, what you've done, or where you've been—call on Jesus, and you will be saved.
The Eternal Name
Jesus' name will be exalted forever.
Revelation's Worship
Revelation 5:13 describes eternal worship: "And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, 'To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!'"
For all eternity, Jesus will be worshiped, honored, and glorified.
The New Name
Revelation 3:12 promises: "I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name."
