The Greek word Paul uses is enkrateia — literally, "inner strength" or "mastery from within." Not the suppression of desire, but the reordering of it. Not the absence of appetite, but appetite submitted to something greater.
That's not willpower. That's the work of the Spirit in a soul that has learned to say no to self and yes to God.
