Justified: Running the Race Set Free

Justified: Running the Race Set Free

In the Christian life, we're called to run a race—not to earn our salvation, but because we've already been declared righteous. We run not as slaves striving for freedom, but as justified sons and daughters running in the freedom Christ has already secured.

Our Justified Athletic Joggers combine performance and theology, reminding us that we run the race of faith not to be justified, but because we are justified—declared righteous by faith in Christ.

What Does It Mean to Be Justified?

Justification is one of the most important doctrines in Christianity, yet it's often misunderstood.

A Legal Declaration

Justification is a legal term. It's God's declaration that we are righteous in His sight—not because we are inherently righteous, but because Christ's righteousness has been credited to our account.

Romans 3:23-24 explains: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."

We were guilty before God's law, deserving condemnation. But through faith in Christ, God declares us "not guilty"—justified, righteous, acquitted.

By Faith, Not Works

The Reformation rallying cry was sola fide—justification by faith alone. This truth is central to the gospel:

"For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law." (Romans 3:28)

"Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ." (Galatians 2:16)

You cannot earn justification through good works, religious rituals, or moral effort. Justification is received by faith alone in Christ alone.

Through Christ's Righteousness

The basis of our justification is not our own righteousness (which is like filthy rags, Isaiah 64:6), but Christ's perfect righteousness credited to us.

2 Corinthians 5:21 reveals this beautiful exchange: "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Christ took our sin; we receive His righteousness. This is the great exchange that makes justification possible.

The Results of Justification

Being justified produces profound results in the believer's life.

Peace with God

Romans 5:1 declares: "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Before justification, we were at war with God—rebels, enemies, under His wrath. But through justification, we have peace. The war is over. We're reconciled to God.

No Condemnation

Romans 8:1 proclaims: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

If you are justified, you stand before God with no condemnation, no guilt, no charge against you. Christ has paid it all.

Access to God

Romans 5:2 continues: "Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God."

Justification gives us access to God's presence. We can approach the throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16), not because we're worthy, but because we're justified.

Assurance of Salvation

Romans 8:33-34 asks: "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us."

If God has justified you, who can condemn you? Your justification is secure because it rests on Christ's finished work, not your ongoing performance.

Running the Race as the Justified

The Christian life is often described as a race. But we don't run to be justified—we run because we are justified.

Hebrews 12:1-2

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith."

We run with endurance, not to earn God's approval, but because we already have it. We run looking to Jesus, who has already secured our justification.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Paul uses athletic imagery to describe the Christian life:

"Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable."

We run with discipline and purpose, not for a perishable prize, but for an imperishable one—the crown of righteousness, the joy of hearing "well done, good and faithful servant," the glory of being conformed to Christ's image.

Philippians 3:12-14

Paul describes his own pursuit:

"Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own... But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Paul runs forward, not backward. He doesn't dwell on past failures or rest on past achievements. He presses on toward the goal because Christ has already made him His own.

Running in Freedom, Not Fear

Because we're justified, we run in freedom, not fear.

Not Running to Earn Salvation

We don't run to earn God's favor or secure our salvation. That's already been accomplished by Christ. We run out of gratitude, love, and desire to honor the One who saved us.

Not Running in Guilt

When we stumble and fall in the race, we don't run in guilt or shame. We confess our sin, receive God's forgiveness, and get back up—because our justification isn't based on our performance.

1 John 1:9 promises: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Running with Joy

Justified runners run with joy. We're not slaves running in fear of punishment—we're children running toward our Father, athletes running for the prize, disciples running to become more like Christ.

The Motivation for the Race

If we're already justified, why run at all? Why pursue holiness, obedience, and Christlikeness?

Love for Christ

We run because we love the One who saved us. "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). Our obedience flows from love, not obligation.

Gratitude for Grace

We run out of gratitude for the grace we've received. Titus 2:11-12 explains: "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives."

Desire for Christlikeness

We run because we want to become more like Jesus. Romans 8:29 says God predestined us "to be conformed to the image of his Son." We pursue holiness not to be justified, but because we are justified and want to reflect Christ.

Eternal Rewards

While salvation is by grace alone, Scripture teaches that believers will receive rewards based on their faithfulness. We run for the imperishable crown, the prize of the upward call, the joy of hearing "well done."

Practical Application: Running Well

How do we run the race well as justified believers?

Lay Aside Every Weight

Hebrews 12:1 instructs us to "lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely." Identify what's slowing you down—sin, distractions, worldly pursuits—and lay them aside.

Run with Endurance

The Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourself. Persevere. Don't give up when the race gets hard.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Hebrews 12:2 tells us to run "looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith." Don't look at your circumstances, your failures, or other runners. Keep your eyes fixed on Christ.

Run in Community

We're surrounded by "a great cloud of witnesses" (Hebrews 12:1). Run alongside other believers. Encourage one another. Spur one another on toward love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24).
