The Verdict: Justified
"Justified." This legal term captures one of the most profound truths of the gospel. The Justified Athletic Joggers feature bold side-print declaring this truth: you have been declared righteous before God through faith in Christ, not by your works.
Justification is God's act of declaring sinners righteous based on Christ's finished work. It's a verdict, not a process. It's a declaration, not a transformation. And it changes everything.
What Is Justification?
Justification is a legal term. It's God's act of declaring sinners righteous, acquitting them of guilt, and crediting them with Christ's righteousness.
Justification Is a Declaration
Romans 3:23-24 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus."
Justification is God's declaration. He declares us righteous. It's not that He makes us righteous (that's sanctification)—He declares us righteous. It's a legal verdict.
Justification Is Forensic
Forensic justification means it's a legal declaration that changes our status before God. We were guilty; now we're declared not guilty. We were condemned; now we're acquitted.
Romans 8:33-34 asks, "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us."
God has justified us. No one can condemn us. The verdict is final.
How Are We Justified?
How does God justify sinners?
Justified by Grace
Romans 3:24 says we are "justified by his grace as a gift." Justification is by grace—God's unmerited favor. We don't deserve it. We can't earn it. It's a gift.
Justified by Faith
Romans 5:1 declares, "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
We are justified by faith, not by works. Faith is the instrument by which we receive justification. We trust in Christ, and God declares us righteous.
Justified by Christ's Blood
Romans 5:9 says, "Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God."
Justification is based on Christ's blood. His death is the ground of our justification. He paid the penalty for our sin, satisfying God's justice.
The Basis of Justification: Imputed Righteousness
How can God declare sinners righteous? Through imputation—the crediting of Christ's righteousness to our account.
Our Sin Imputed to Christ
2 Corinthians 5:21 says, "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."
Our sin was imputed to Christ. He bore our sin on the cross. He was treated as if He had committed our sins.
Christ's Righteousness Imputed to Us
Philippians 3:9 speaks of "not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith."
Christ's righteousness is imputed to us. We're credited with His perfect obedience. God sees us as righteous because we're clothed in Christ's righteousness.
Justification vs. Sanctification
Justification and sanctification are distinct but related.
Justification
- A declaration — God declares us righteous
- Instantaneous — It happens the moment we believe
- Complete — We're fully justified, not partially
- External — It changes our legal status before God
- Once for all — We're justified once, not repeatedly
Sanctification
- A transformation — God makes us holy
- Progressive — It's a lifelong process
- Incomplete — We're being sanctified, not yet perfected
- Internal — It changes our character and conduct
- Ongoing — We're continually being sanctified
We're justified once for all. We're being sanctified daily.
The Results of Justification
What happens when we're justified?
1. Peace with God
Romans 5:1 says, "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Before justification, we were enemies of God (Romans 5:10). But through justification, we have peace. The war is over. We're reconciled to God.
2. No Condemnation
Romans 8:1 declares, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
Justification removes condemnation. We're no longer under God's wrath. We're declared not guilty.
3. Access to God
Romans 5:2 says, "Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand."
Justification gives us access to God. We can approach Him boldly (Hebrews 4:16). We're no longer separated from Him.
4. Hope of Glory
Romans 5:2 continues, "And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God." Justification gives us hope. We're confident of future glorification because we're already justified.
Living as the Justified
How do we live as the justified?
1. Don't Live in Guilt
If God has justified you, don't live in guilt. Romans 8:33 asks, "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies." If God has declared you righteous, who can condemn you?
2. Pursue Holiness
Justification doesn't excuse sin—it frees us to pursue holiness. Romans 6:1-2 asks, "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?"
We're justified to live holy lives, not to continue in sin.
3. Boast in Christ
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 says, "And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, 'Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.'"
Our righteousness is in Christ. We boast in Him, not in ourselves.
4. Live in Peace
Romans 5:1 says we "have peace with God." Live in that peace. Don't let guilt, fear, or condemnation rob you of the peace justification brings.
