His Grace is Enough

His Grace is Enough

Beyond the Checklist: Finding Rest in "His Grace is Enough"

Do you ever feel like you’re running a spiritual race you can’t win? You have your checklist. Pray more. Read the Bible consistently. Be more patient with your family. Forgive that person who hurt you. Serve more at church. Don't lose your temper. The list goes on, and if you’re anything like me, you often end the day looking at your spiritual "performance review" with a sigh. The boxes aren't all ticked. You fell short. Again.

In these moments, a heavy lie can settle over our hearts: *“I am not enough. I have to do more, be better, try harder for God to be pleased with me.”  We start to view our relationship with God as a transaction—our good works in exchange for His approval. But what if we’ve been reading the contract all wrong? What if it’s not a contract at all, but a gift?

That’s where the breathtaking, life-altering truth of grace comes in. The Apostle Paul, a giant of the faith, knew this struggle intimately. He pleaded with God to remove a "thorn in the flesh," a persistent weakness or trial that plagued him. He wanted to be stronger, more capable, less hindered.

God’s answer to him is an answer for every one of us who feels we're falling short. "But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)  Read that again. Slowly. God didn't say, "Try harder, and then My grace will cover the rest." He didn't say, "Once you overcome this weakness, you will be useful to Me." He said, "My grace is *sufficient*."  Sufficient.  Not "just barely enough," but "completely and abundantly adequate." It means it's all you need.

Right now. In the middle of your mess, your weakness, and your unchecked boxes. Grace isn't a safety net for when we fail; it's the very ground we stand on. It’s the unearned, unmerited, unending favor of God. It’s Him looking at our spiritual performance review, stained with failures and shortcomings, and stamping it with one word in the blood of Christ: PAID.

Our weakness isn't a liability to God; it's the very arena where His power is most perfectly displayed. When we are exhausted, He is our strength. When we are lost, He is our guide. When we are broken, He is our healer. Our emptiness is simply the space He loves to fill.

So, what does this mean for us today, with our endless to-do lists and feelings of inadequacy? It means we can stop striving and start resting. It means we can trade our frantic efforts for faithful surrender. It means we can be honest about our weaknesses, knowing they are not a disqualifier but an invitation for Christ’s power to rest upon us. Your worth is not measured by your performance. It was sealed at the cross. His grace was enough for the thief on the cross who had a lifetime of sin and only moments to believe. And His grace is enough for you, right here, right now.
