"He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay." - Matthew 28:6
These words, spoken by an angel to women arriving at Jesus' tomb on the first Easter morning, are the most important announcement in human history. Not "He was a good teacher." Not "He died nobly." But "He is risen."
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the hinge on which all of Christianity turns. Without it, our faith collapses. With it, everything changes.
Why the Resurrection Matters
Paul makes the stakes crystal clear in 1 Corinthians 15:17-19: "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied."
If Jesus didn't rise from the dead, Christianity is a lie. Our sins aren't forgiven. Our loved ones who died in faith are gone forever. Our hope is delusional. We're wasting our lives on a fairy tale.
But if He did rise—if the tomb really was empty, if Jesus really appeared to hundreds of witnesses, if death really was defeated—then everything changes. Sin is conquered. Death is defeated. Hope is real. And we have a living Savior, not a dead martyr.
The Historical Reality
The resurrection isn't a metaphor or a spiritual experience. It's a historical event that happened in space and time. Jesus' body was physically raised from the dead.
The evidence is compelling. The tomb was empty—even Jesus' enemies didn't dispute that. The grave clothes were left behind in a way that suggested the body passed through them, not that it was unwrapped. Over 500 people saw the risen Christ, many of whom were still alive when Paul wrote 1 Corinthians 15 and could be questioned.
The transformation of the disciples is perhaps the most powerful evidence. These were men who fled when Jesus was arrested, who hid behind locked doors in fear. Yet after the resurrection, they boldly proclaimed Christ, even unto death. People don't die for what they know is a lie.
The resurrection explains the explosion of the early church. Within decades, this small Jewish sect had spread throughout the Roman Empire, turning the world upside down with the message that a crucified criminal was Lord and had risen from the dead.
What the Resurrection Proves
The resurrection validates everything Jesus claimed. He said He was the Son of God—the resurrection proves it (Romans 1:4). He said He would rise on the third day—He did. He said He had authority to forgive sins—the resurrection confirms it.
It also proves that God accepted Jesus' sacrifice. The resurrection is God's "Amen" to Christ's cry, "It is finished." Death couldn't hold Him because sin's penalty was fully paid. The resurrection is the receipt for our redemption.
Furthermore, it proves that Jesus has power over death. He didn't just survive death or escape it—He conquered it. He holds "the keys of Death and Hades" (Revelation 1:18). Death is no longer the final word. Christ has the last word, and that word is "Risen."
What the Resurrection Means for Us
Because Christ is risen, we have a living hope. 1 Peter 1:3 says, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."
Our hope isn't in a philosophy or a moral code. It's in a Person who died and rose again. And because He lives, we will live also (John 14:19).
The resurrection also guarantees our future resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 declares, "But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive."
Jesus' resurrection is the preview of ours. The same power that raised Him will raise us. Death is not the end—it's a doorway to resurrection life.
Living in Resurrection Power
The resurrection isn't just a past event or a future hope. It's a present reality that transforms how we live today.
Romans 6:4 says, "We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."
The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in us. We're not just forgiven—we're made new. We're not just saved from sin's penalty—we're freed from sin's power. We don't just have a new status—we have a new life.
This means we can say no to sin. We can overcome temptation. We can break free from destructive patterns. Not in our own strength, but in resurrection power.
The Resurrection and Our Mission
The resurrection also fuels our mission. The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 begins with a resurrection declaration: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Because Jesus is risen, He has all authority. And He sends us out in that authority to make disciples.
We don't proclaim a dead hero. We proclaim a living Lord. We don't invite people to follow a good example. We invite them to know a risen Savior who offers forgiveness, new life, and eternal hope.
The resurrection gives us boldness. If God raised Jesus from the dead, He can do anything. No heart is too hard. No situation is too hopeless. No person is beyond reach. The same power that conquered death can save anyone.
Easter Every Day
Easter isn't just one Sunday a year. It's the reality we live in every day. Every morning is a reminder that Christ is risen. Every challenge is an opportunity to trust in resurrection power. Every setback is temporary because we serve a God who specializes in bringing life from death.
This is why we created our He Is Risen Tee. It's not just for Easter Sunday. It's a year-round declaration that Jesus is alive, death is defeated, and hope is real.
When you wear a shirt that says "He Is Risen," you're proclaiming the central truth of Christianity. You're declaring that the tomb is empty, the Savior is alive, and nothing will ever be the same.
The Final Victory
One day, the resurrection will be complete. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 promises, "When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed up in victory.' 'O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?' The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Death will be no more. Sin will be no more. Suffering will be no more. And we will live forever in resurrected bodies in a resurrected world with our resurrected Lord.
That's the hope of Easter. That's the power of the resurrection. That's why we can say with confidence, joy, and unshakeable hope:
He is risen. He is risen indeed.
