Born to Die: Jesus' Redemptive Mission
"He Came to Die." This profound truth captures the heart of the gospel. The He Came to Die Christian T-Shirt features a powerful cross design with this redemptive message, reminding us that Jesus came to earth with a singular mission: to die on the cross for our salvation and rise again in victory.
The incarnation wasn't the end goal—it was the means to the end. Jesus didn't come just to teach, heal, or set an example. He came to die. The manger led to the cross, and the cross led to the empty tomb.
The Mission Declared From the Beginning
Jesus' mission to die wasn't an accident or a tragic turn of events. It was planned from eternity and declared from the beginning of His ministry.
Announced at His Birth
Matthew 1:21 records the angel's announcement to Joseph: "You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." The name "Jesus" means "the Lord saves." From birth, His mission was clear: salvation through sacrifice.
Declared in His Ministry
Mark 10:45 records Jesus' own words: "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Jesus came to give His life—to die as a ransom payment for sinners.
John 12:27 reveals Jesus' resolve: "Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? But for this purpose I have come to this hour." The cross was His purpose. He came to die.
Prophesied in Scripture
Isaiah 53:5 prophesied the Messiah's suffering centuries before Jesus' birth: "But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed."
Psalm 22 describes crucifixion in vivid detail—written a thousand years before crucifixion was even invented. The Old Testament pointed forward to the cross. Jesus came to fulfill these prophecies.
Why Did Jesus Have to Die?
The cross wasn't optional. Jesus had to die for our salvation. But why?
1. To Satisfy God's Justice
Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Sin is rebellion against God, and it demands punishment. Romans 6:23 declares, "For the wages of sin is death."
God is perfectly just. He cannot overlook sin or sweep it under the rug. Sin must be punished. But God is also perfectly loving. He doesn't want sinners to perish. So God Himself, in the person of Jesus Christ, bore the punishment we deserved.
Romans 3:25-26 explains: "God put forward [Jesus] as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness... so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus." The cross satisfies both God's justice and His love.
2. To Pay the Ransom for Sin
Mark 10:45 says Jesus came "to give his life as a ransom for many." A ransom is a payment made to secure someone's release from captivity. We were enslaved to sin, held captive by Satan, and condemned to death. Jesus paid the ransom price with His blood.
1 Peter 1:18-19 says, "You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot."
3. To Bear God's Wrath
Isaiah 53:10 says, "Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief." On the cross, Jesus bore the full weight of God's wrath against sin. He experienced the punishment we deserved so we could receive the mercy we don't deserve.
2 Corinthians 5:21 declares, "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Jesus became sin for us. He took our guilt and gave us His righteousness.
4. To Defeat Death and Satan
Hebrews 2:14-15 says Jesus became human "that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery."
The cross wasn't defeat—it was victory. Colossians 2:15 says Jesus "disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him." Through His death, Jesus conquered death, defeated Satan, and secured our freedom.
5. To Reconcile Us to God
2 Corinthians 5:18-19 says, "All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself... in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them."
Sin separated us from God. We were enemies of God, alienated and hostile (Colossians 1:21). But through the cross, Jesus made peace between God and humanity. He reconciled us to God, bringing us into relationship with our Creator.
The Willing Sacrifice
Jesus wasn't a victim. He was a willing sacrifice. No one took His life from Him—He laid it down freely.
John 10:17-18 records Jesus' words: "For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again."
Jesus chose the cross. He could have called down legions of angels to rescue Him (Matthew 26:53), but He didn't. He endured the cross for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2)—the joy of saving sinners and glorifying the Father.
The Finished Work
On the cross, Jesus declared, "It is finished" (John 19:30). The Greek word tetelestai means "paid in full." The debt of sin is paid. The work of redemption is complete. Nothing remains to be done.
Hebrews 10:12 says, "But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God." Jesus sat down because the work was finished. There's nothing left to add to His sacrifice.
The Resurrection: Death Defeated
Jesus came to die, but death couldn't hold Him. He rose from the dead on the third day, proving that His sacrifice was accepted and that death has been defeated.
Romans 4:25 says Jesus "was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." The resurrection is essential to our salvation. Without it, the cross would be meaningless (1 Corinthians 15:17).
Because Jesus rose, we have hope. Because He conquered death, we will too. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 declares, "But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive."
How Should We Respond?
If Jesus came to die for us, how should we respond?
1. Believe in His Sacrifice
John 3:16 promises, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." We must believe that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead.
2. Receive His Gift
Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." Salvation is a gift. We receive it by faith, not by works.
3. Live in Gratitude
2 Corinthians 5:15 says, "And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised." If Jesus died for us, we should live for Him.
4. Proclaim His Death
1 Corinthians 11:26 says, "For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." We proclaim the cross through communion, through our words, and through our lives.
