Two simple words capture the essence of worship: Glory to God.
These aren't just words we sing in church or say at the end of prayers. They're a declaration of God's worthiness, an acknowledgment of His supremacy, and a surrender of our own glory in favor of His.
Our Glory to God collection celebrates this fundamental truth of worship, reminding us that all glory, honor, and praise belong to God alone.
What Is Glory?
Before we can give God glory, we need to understand what glory is.
The Weight of Worthiness
The Hebrew word for glory, kabod, literally means "weight" or "heaviness." It refers to the weighty significance, the substantial worth, the impressive magnificence of something or someone.
When we say "Glory to God," we're declaring that God has weight, worth, and significance beyond measure. He is infinitely glorious.
The Display of Divine Attributes
God's glory is the visible manifestation of His invisible attributes. When God's glory is revealed, His character is on display—His holiness, power, wisdom, love, justice, and mercy.
Exodus 33:18-19 records Moses' request: "Please show me your glory." God responded by proclaiming His name and His attributes: "The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34:6).
Why God Deserves Glory
God doesn't need our glory—He's infinitely glorious in Himself. But He deserves our glory because of who He is and what He's done.
Because of Who He Is
God is the Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of all things. Revelation 4:11 declares: "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."
God deserves glory simply because He is God—infinite, eternal, unchanging, all-powerful, all-knowing, and perfectly holy.
Because of What He's Done
God deserves glory for His mighty acts of creation, providence, and redemption.
Revelation 5:12 proclaims: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!"
Christ deserves glory because He accomplished redemption through His death and resurrection.
Biblical Commands to Give God Glory
Scripture repeatedly commands us to give God glory.
Psalm 29:2
"Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness."
We're commanded to ascribe—to attribute, to give, to declare—to God the glory that is due His name.
Psalm 96:7-8
"Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength! Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!"
Notice the repetition: ascribe glory, ascribe glory, ascribe glory. This isn't optional—it's commanded.
1 Chronicles 16:28-29
"Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength! Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness."
Giving God glory is inseparable from worship. When we worship, we're declaring God's worth and giving Him the glory He deserves.
How to Give God Glory
Practically speaking, how do we give God glory?
Through Worship
The most direct way to give God glory is through worship—singing His praises, declaring His worth, celebrating His goodness.
Psalm 50:23 says: "The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me."
When you gather with God's people to sing, pray, and hear God's Word, you're giving Him glory.
Through Obedience
Obedience glorifies God by demonstrating that His ways are good and His commands are trustworthy.
Jesus said: "By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples" (John 15:8).
Through Proclamation
When you share the gospel, testify to God's goodness, and make His name known, you give Him glory.
Psalm 96:3 commands: "Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!"
Through Gratitude
Thanksgiving glorifies God by acknowledging that every good gift comes from Him.
Psalm 69:30 says: "I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving."
Through Everyday Life
1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us: "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
Every aspect of life—work, relationships, recreation, rest—can be done for God's glory.
The Doxology: Glory to God
Throughout church history, Christians have used doxologies—short hymns of praise giving glory to God.
The Gloria Patri
"Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."
This ancient doxology declares that glory belongs to the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—from eternity past to eternity future.
The Common Doxology
"Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen."
This familiar hymn calls all creation—earthly and heavenly—to praise the Triune God.
Glory to God in Scripture
The phrase "glory to God" appears throughout Scripture in various forms.
The Angels' Song
When Christ was born, the angels sang: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" (Luke 2:14).
The incarnation of Christ brought glory to God in the highest heaven.
Paul's Doxologies
Paul frequently concluded his letters with doxologies giving glory to God:
- "To the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen" (Romans 16:27)
- "To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen" (Ephesians 3:21)
- "To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen" (Philippians 4:20)
- "To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen" (1 Timothy 1:17)
Revelation's Worship
The book of Revelation is filled with scenes of heavenly worship giving glory to God:
"And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, 'Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!'" (Revelation 4:8)
"Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power" (Revelation 4:11)
The Danger of Stealing God's Glory
One of the gravest sins is taking for ourselves the glory that belongs to God alone.
Herod's Example
Acts 12:21-23 records a sobering warning. When Herod gave a speech and the people shouted, "The voice of a god, and not of a man!" Herod accepted the glory instead of giving it to God. "Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last."
Our Temptation
We may not be as blatant as Herod, but we're constantly tempted to take credit for what God has done, to seek praise for ourselves, to build our own reputation rather than God's.
Isaiah 42:8 warns: "I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other."
Eternal Glory
One day, all creation will give glory to God.
Every Knee Will Bow
Philippians 2:10-11 promises: "At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
Every creature will ultimately give glory to God—either willingly now or unwillingly then.
The New Creation
Revelation 21:23 describes the new Jerusalem: "And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb."
God's glory will illuminate the new creation for all eternity.
