Romans 11:36 contains one of the most comprehensive statements about God's sovereignty and glory in all of Scripture: "For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen."
This verse declares that God is the source, sustainer, and goal of all things. Everything originates from Him, is sustained by Him, and exists for Him. Therefore, all glory belongs to Him.
Our From Him Through Him To Him collection celebrates this profound truth, reminding us that our entire existence is wrapped up in God—from Him, through Him, and to Him.
The Context of Romans 11:36
To fully appreciate this verse, we need to understand its context.
The Conclusion of Romans 9-11
Romans 9-11 addresses God's sovereignty in salvation, particularly regarding Israel's rejection of the Messiah and the inclusion of Gentiles in God's plan. Paul wrestles with difficult questions about God's justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
After exploring these deep theological truths, Paul breaks into worship with Romans 11:33-36:
"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 'For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?' 'Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?' For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen."
A Doxology of Worship
Romans 11:36 is a doxology—a short hymn of praise giving glory to God. After contemplating God's wisdom, sovereignty, and grace, Paul can only respond with worship.
From Him: God as Source
The phrase "from him" declares that God is the source, origin, and beginning of all things.
Creator of All
Genesis 1:1 begins: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." Everything that exists came from God. He spoke, and creation came into being.
Colossians 1:16 emphasizes: "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him."
Giver of Every Good Gift
James 1:17 declares: "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights."
Everything good in your life—your breath, your health, your relationships, your abilities, your opportunities—comes from God.
Source of Salvation
Salvation originates from God, not from us. Ephesians 2:8 says: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God."
Your salvation came from God. He initiated it, planned it, and accomplished it.
Through Him: God as Sustainer
The phrase "through him" declares that God sustains, upholds, and maintains all things.
Sustainer of Creation
God didn't just create the world and walk away. He actively sustains it moment by moment.
Colossians 1:17 says: "And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together."
Hebrews 1:3 declares that Christ is "upholding the universe by the word of his power."
Every atom, every molecule, every star, every galaxy is held together by God's sustaining power. If He withdrew His hand for even a moment, everything would collapse into nothingness.
Provider of Daily Needs
Jesus taught us to pray: "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11). God provides what we need each day through His sustaining grace.
Acts 17:28 says: "In him we live and move and have our being." Our very existence is sustained by God moment by moment.
Sanctifier of Believers
Not only does God save us, but He also sanctifies us—transforming us into the image of Christ through His ongoing work.
Philippians 1:6 promises: "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
To Him: God as Goal
The phrase "to him" declares that God is the goal, purpose, and end of all things.
The Purpose of Creation
Why did God create the universe? For His glory. Everything exists to display God's character, magnify His name, and bring Him glory.
Isaiah 43:7 says God created us "for my glory."
Revelation 4:11 declares: "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created."
The Purpose of Salvation
Why did God save us? For His glory. Ephesians 1:6, 12, and 14 repeatedly emphasize that salvation is "to the praise of his glorious grace" and "to the praise of his glory."
We're saved not primarily for our benefit (though we certainly benefit), but for God's glory.
The Purpose of Your Life
Why do you exist? For God's glory. 1 Corinthians 10:31 commands: "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
Your ultimate purpose isn't happiness, success, or fulfillment—it's glorifying God.
The Implications of Romans 11:36
This verse has profound implications for how we understand God and ourselves.
God's Absolute Sovereignty
If all things are from Him, through Him, and to Him, then God is absolutely sovereign over all things. Nothing happens outside His control or against His will.
This doesn't mean God causes evil, but it does mean He sovereignly works all things—even evil—for His purposes and glory (Romans 8:28, Genesis 50:20).
God's Complete Self-Sufficiency
God doesn't need anything from us. He's completely self-sufficient. Acts 17:25 says: "Nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything."
God doesn't create because He's lonely, save because He needs us, or work because He lacks something. He acts out of the overflow of His perfect, self-sufficient glory.
Our Complete Dependence
If all things are from Him and through Him, we're completely dependent on God for everything. We have nothing that we didn't receive from Him (1 Corinthians 4:7).
This should produce humility, gratitude, and trust.
God's Exclusive Glory
If all things are to Him, then all glory belongs to Him alone. We can't take credit for anything because everything comes from Him and exists for Him.
This is why Paul concludes: "To him be glory forever. Amen."
Living in Light of Romans 11:36
How should this truth transform how we live?
Worship God as Source
Recognize that everything you have comes from God. Your life, your breath, your abilities, your opportunities, your salvation—all from Him.
This should produce gratitude and worship.
Trust God as Sustainer
Since God sustains all things, you can trust Him to sustain you. He who holds the universe together can certainly hold your life together.
This should produce peace and confidence.
Live for God as Goal
Since all things exist for God's glory, make His glory your ultimate purpose. Ask in every decision: "Will this bring God glory?"
This should produce purposeful, intentional living.
Give God All Glory
Since everything is from Him, through Him, and to Him, give Him all the glory. Don't take credit for what God has done. Don't boast in your achievements. Give God the glory He deserves.
The Trinitarian Dimension
While Romans 11:36 doesn't explicitly mention the Trinity, many theologians see a Trinitarian pattern:
- From Him – From the Father, the source and planner
- Through Him – Through the Son, the agent and sustainer
- To Him – To the Spirit, who brings all things to their goal in God's glory
All three persons of the Trinity work together in creation, providence, and redemption for the glory of God.
The Eternal Perspective
Romans 11:36 gives us an eternal perspective. Everything that happens in time is part of God's eternal plan that originates from Him, is sustained by Him, and culminates in His glory.
One day, all creation will acknowledge this truth. Philippians 2:10-11 promises: "At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
