From Him, Through Him, To Him: The Doxology of God's Sovereignty

"For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen." - Romans 11:36

These words conclude one of the most theologically dense sections in all of Scripture. After eleven chapters exploring God's plan of salvation—His election of Israel, His inclusion of the Gentiles, His faithfulness to His promises—Paul erupts in worship.

But this isn't just poetic flourish. It's a comprehensive statement about the nature of reality itself. Everything—absolutely everything—is from God, through God, and to God.

From Him: The Source of All Things

"From him are all things." This is the doctrine of creation. God is the ultimate source, the first cause, the origin of everything that exists. He didn't work with pre-existing materials or collaborate with other beings. He spoke, and the universe came into being (Genesis 1:3).

But "from him" means more than just creation. It means that everything good in your life—every breath, every blessing, every moment of joy—comes from God. James 1:17 says, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights."

This includes your salvation. You didn't find God; He found you. You didn't choose Him first; He chose you (John 15:16). Even your faith is a gift from Him (Ephesians 2:8). From beginning to end, salvation is from God.

This truth humbles us. We can't boast in our spiritual achievements because we didn't initiate any of it. We can't take credit for our faith because it was given to us. Everything we have, everything we are, is from Him.

Through Him: The Sustainer of All Things

"Through him are all things." God didn't just create the world and step back. He actively sustains it. Colossians 1:17 says that "in him all things hold together." Hebrews 1:3 declares that He is "upholding the universe by the word of his power."

Every heartbeat, every breath, every moment of existence depends on God's sustaining power. If He withdrew His hand for even a second, everything would collapse into nothingness.

This is true in the spiritual realm as well. Your sanctification—your growth in holiness—is through Him. Philippians 2:13 says, "For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure." Even your desire to obey God is a work of God in you.

This truth comforts us. We're not left to our own strength to live the Christian life. God doesn't just save us and then leave us to figure it out. He works in us, through us, and for us. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in us (Ephesians 1:19-20).

To Him: The Goal of All Things

"To him are all things." This is the doctrine of God's glory. Everything exists for God's glory. The universe was created to display His majesty. History unfolds to reveal His character. Your life—every moment, every decision, every breath—exists to bring Him glory.

This is the ultimate purpose of everything. Not your happiness, not your success, not even your salvation as an end in itself. All of it points to God's glory. 1 Corinthians 10:31 commands, "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

Even suffering serves this purpose. Romans 8:28 promises that "for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." And what is that purpose? Verse 29 tells us: "to be conformed to the image of his Son." God uses everything—even pain—to make us more like Christ, which brings Him glory.

This truth reorients us. We stop asking, "What's in it for me?" and start asking, "How does this bring God glory?" We stop living for our own comfort and start living for His renown.

The Sovereignty of God

When you put these three phrases together—from Him, through Him, to Him—you get a comprehensive picture of God's sovereignty. He is the source, the sustainer, and the goal of all things. Nothing happens outside His control. Nothing catches Him by surprise. Nothing thwarts His purposes.

This doesn't mean God causes evil or that we're robots without free will. It means that God is so sovereign, He can work through human choices—even sinful ones—to accomplish His purposes. Joseph understood this when he told his brothers, "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good" (Genesis 50:20).

God's sovereignty is both terrifying and comforting. It's terrifying because it means we're not in control. We can't manipulate outcomes or guarantee results. But it's comforting because it means God is in control. Our lives aren't subject to random chance or human whims. They're in the hands of a sovereign, loving, all-wise God.

The Proper Response: Worship

Notice how Paul responds to this truth: "To him be glory forever. Amen." He doesn't analyze it further. He doesn't try to solve the philosophical tensions. He worships.

This is the proper response to God's sovereignty. Not fear, not fatalism, not passivity—but worship. When you truly grasp that everything is from Him, through Him, and to Him, you can't help but give Him glory.

Worship isn't just singing songs on Sunday. It's living every moment in light of God's sovereignty. It's trusting Him when life doesn't make sense. It's obeying Him even when it's costly. It's finding joy in Him even when circumstances are hard.

Living in Light of God's Sovereignty

So how do we live in light of Romans 11:36? We recognize that we're not the center of the universe—God is. We stop trying to control outcomes and start trusting God's plan. We stop living for our own glory and start living for His.

We also find freedom in this truth. If everything is from God, we don't have to earn His favor. If everything is through God, we don't have to sustain ourselves. If everything is to God, we don't have to create our own meaning or purpose. It's all already defined.

This is why we created our From Him Through Him To Him collection. It's a daily reminder of this foundational truth—that God is the source, sustainer, and goal of all things.

When you wear a shirt that says "From Him Through Him To Him," you're declaring that your life isn't about you. You're proclaiming that God is sovereign over every detail. You're committing to live for His glory, not your own.

The Doxology of Daily Life

Romans 11:36 is a doxology—a statement of praise. But it's not just meant for theological reflection. It's meant to shape how we live every day.

When you wake up, remember: this day is from Him. When you face challenges, remember: He will sustain you through them. When you make decisions, remember: they should be to His glory.

From Him. Through Him. To Him. This is the rhythm of the Christian life. This is the heartbeat of worship. This is the foundation of everything.

To Him be glory forever. Amen.
