All of You: What Jesus Really Meant by the Great Commandment

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." — Mark 12:30

When someone asks Jesus what the greatest commandment is, He doesn't hesitate.

Four words. Heart. Soul. Mind. Strength. And that little word before each one — all — is where most of us quietly check out.

We're Good at Partial Obedience

If we're honest, most of us love God with some of ourselves, some of the time.

We show up on Sunday. We pray when things get hard. We give when it's convenient. But total surrender? That's a different conversation.

Jesus isn't asking for your Sunday morning. He's asking for your Monday afternoon, your 2 AM anxiety spiral, your career ambitions, your relationships, your bank account, your body. All of it. Every part of you — offered back to the One who made every part of you.

That's not a burden. That's freedom.

What Each Word Actually Means

Heart — in the Hebrew and Greek context, the heart isn't just emotion. It's the seat of your will, your desires, your deepest motivations. To love God with your heart means letting Him shape what you want.

Soul — your soul is your life-force, your very breath. This is the part of you that persists beyond the physical. Loving God with your soul means your eternal self is oriented toward Him, not toward the temporary things that fade.

Mind — this one surprises people. God isn't asking you to turn your brain off. He's asking you to turn it toward Him. Theology matters. Truth matters. Loving God with your mind means thinking carefully, reading deeply, and refusing to settle for shallow faith.

Strength — your body, your energy, your resources, your time. The physical, tangible, everyday stuff of life. This is where faith gets practical. How you work. How you rest. How you spend. All of it, an act of worship.

Soli Deo Gloria — Glory to God Alone

The Reformers had a phrase for this kind of life: Soli Deo Gloria. Glory to God alone.

Not glory to your reputation. Not glory to your comfort. Not glory to your plans.

When you love God with everything — heart, soul, mind, and strength — your whole life becomes an act of worship. That's not a religious performance. That's the most fully human thing you can do.
